IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside: A Home Race, Through Luke McKenzie’s Eyes
There’s something different about race morning in Oceanside!
The air feels lighter. The energy builds early. And for WYN republic, it means something more — this is where it all began.
A Morning on the Course
“Good morning, it’s Luke McKenzie, founder of WYN republic, down here at the Oceanside 70.3. They’ve just gotten underway, we’re here for the pro race this morning and looking forward to watching them come out of the water soon.”
Race day starts the same way it always does, anticipation.
Athletes lining up, months of preparation behind them, one long day ahead!
But this year brought something a little different.
“It’s nice and warm. Usually it’s very cold here in Oceanside, so we’re looking forward to a beautifully sunny San Diego day.”
A rare shift in conditions, but the same intensity on course.

Why Oceanside Matters
For WYN republic, Oceanside isn’t just another race on the calendar.
It’s personal.
“This is where WYN was founded, right here in North County San Diego. So we feel like this is a home race.”
From early beginnings in nearby Carlsbad to a global community of athletes, the roots of WYN are tied closely to this coastline. Every year, Oceanside becomes a moment to come back, to reconnect with the sport, the athletes, and the community that built it.
“We’re really looking forward to seeing a lot of WYN athletes out on course today.”
And they showed up, from pros to our WYNR team, representing the brand across every part of the race.

The Reality of Race Day
From the outside, Oceanside looks fast.
But Luke knows better.
“The biggest mental challenge right now for these athletes is getting through this run course. They’ve had a hard bike through Camp Pendleton, and even though the run is relatively flat, there are some really steep inclines coming up and down from the beach.”
It’s the kind of course that tests more than just fitness.
It asks for patience. Control. And the ability to dig deep when it matters most.
“These are the parts of the race where you’ve really got to push through.”
Where the Race Comes Alive
For Luke, there’s one place where everything comes together.
“My favorite part of race day is standing right here on hot corner where all the action is. You see the athletes going up and down multiple times.”
The Esplanade becomes the heartbeat of the race.
Crowds build. Energy lifts. Every lap tells a different story.
“We’ve seen lots of WYN kits out there on course. We’re cheering for everyone that comes through, it’s such an amazing atmosphere down here.”
It’s not just about watching.
It’s about being part of it, encouraging, supporting, and celebrating every athlete, no matter where they are in their race.

More Than a Race
Oceanside is more than a start line or a finish chute.
It’s a reminder of where WYN began!
Of the athletes who continue to push the sport forward.
And of the community that shows up, year after year.
From Carlsbad roots to race day on the coast, this one always means more.
And as the sun sets on another Oceanside 70.3, one thing remains the same:
We’ll be back!
