A New Chapter of Strength: Celebrating Motherhood with Sophie Evans
This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating more than performance! We’re celebrating perspective, resilience, and the women who continue to show up on the course and in life with strength that goes far beyond sport.
For WYN republic, that story lives within our community. It lives in athletes who are chasing start lines and finish lines, while also navigating something even bigger. It lives in women like Sophie (Coldwell) Evans, who has stepped back into racing after welcoming her first baby, Phoebe, and is already redefining what strength looks like in this new chapter!
Redefining What Performance Looks Like
For Sophie, returning to training hasn’t been about doing more, it’s been about doing what matters.
“Becoming a mum has made my training much more intentional. Time is more limited and it's more precious now so every session has more purpose, and I’m more present in what I’m doing.”
There’s a shift that happens here, one that many athletes spend years trying to find. Less noise. More clarity.
Racing is still important. But it’s no longer everything.
“I actually think that balance has helped me perform better because I’m less consumed by the outcome. I am just grateful that my body has not only given me Phoebe but is getting me back to training and racing again!”
It’s a reminder that performance isn’t always about pushing harder. Sometimes, it’s about seeing things differently.

A Different Kind of Motivation
There’s an expectation that this chapter might slow things down. That fatigue might outweigh drive.
But for Sophie, it’s been the opposite!
“I expected to feel more tired, and I do, but I didn’t expect to feel such a strong drive to make the most of every opportunity!”
That motivation now comes from something deeper.
“I want to show Phoebe what it looks like to pursue something you love with commitment and joy. Racing is still about pushing my limits, but it also feels more meaningful now.”
This is no longer just about racing. It’s about setting an example.
The Start Line Means Something Different Now
Returning to racing after pregnancy isn’t just physical, it’s emotional.
“It felt emotional, to be honest. There was a mix of uncertainty and excitement - I didn’t quite know what to expect from my body, but I was proud just to be there and it felt like a big milestone in itself.”
That first start line back isn’t just another race. It’s a milestone!
And when Sophie crossed the line at her first IRONMAN 70.3 Valencia with a second-place finish, it meant more than a podium result.
"It meant a lot! It was my first 70.3 reminder and I was unsure on how it was going to go but it was nice to be reminded that I can be a mum and that I can still compete at a high level while navigating this new chapter. It was more than the result, it was about proving to myself that the work I’m putting in and the sacrifices that we’re making as a family are hopefully going to be worth while!”
It’s proof that strength evolves, but it doesn’t disappear!
The Reality Behind the Scenes
What often goes unseen is the structure, support, and constant adjustment required to make it all work.
"They say it takes a village and as cliche as it sounds I really couldn’t agree more.”
Balancing training and motherhood isn’t about perfection.
"It's a constant juggle, and not every day goes to plan. Both Tom and I wouldn’t be able to do what we do if it wasn’t for our family (especially our mum’s!), who go above and beyond for us and Phoebe! We rely on structure, support, and flexibility, I’ve learned to let go of perfection and consistency over time matters more than any single session, and sometimes that means training looks a little different than it used to.”
There’s power in that mindset, especially in endurance sport, where progress is built over time!

For the Women Finding Their Way Back
Sophie’s message to other women returning to sport is simple, but powerful:
"Be patient with yourself and trust the process. Every journey is different, and progress isn’t always linear.”
It’s easy to compare. To rush. To expect everything to come back instantly.
But this chapter asks for something different.
“Celebrate the small wins, listen to your body, and don’t be afraid to adjust expectations. You’re capable of more than you think, but it’s okay to take your time getting there!”

Celebrating the Strength of Endurance Moms
Motherhood doesn’t take away from performance, it reshapes it!
It adds perspective. It builds resilience. It creates a different kind of strength.
This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating the women who show up for both. The early mornings, the interrupted routines, the adjusted expectations and the unwavering commitment to keep going.
Because endurance moms aren’t just balancing it all. They’re redefining what it means to be strong!
And they continue to prove, every day, that they can do hard things, on the course and far beyond it!
